A functional layout is the most important thing for the truck terminal. There should be ample parking, cross-docking, a warehouse, and other facilities for drivers and staff. Another major challenge for a truck terminal is its circulation. A circulation plan has been developed for easy movement of the trucks and their docking, loading and unloading operations. Proper signage has been used to ensure the smooth operation of the truck terminal.
Derivations of the truck terminal design in two simple steps are shown. First, the total site has been preliminarily demarcated based on the service areas where different facilities will be provided and a smooth circulation system for heavy and light trucks has been designed. Second, through analysis and design, the main service area for the truck terminal has been divided into two parts. One part comprises a cargo loading and unloading area for inter-district trucks and a cargo storage area. The other part comprises the loading and unloading area for local light freight vehicles. Ample idle parking has been provided for both types of trucks, local and inter-district. After that, all supporting facilities, including administrative facilities, utility buildings, truck maintenance, fuel stations, exit and entry gates with weigh machines, a mosque, a restaurant, temporary parking, medical facilities, food courts, security and control, etc., have been provided. There should be scope for truck maintenance facilities in a truck terminal as well as boarding facilities for the drivers. An accommodation facility is provided for truck drivers and terminal staff.
