Description
The project “SHAKUNI Lake” is a visionary and unique urban and water retention project in the context of Bangladesh. Most of the prime infrastructure of Madaripur town was built around this lake.
This lake was in a vulnerable condition due to illegal encroachment and earth fill. For several years, it has been faced with the demand to address various urban facilities for city dwellers, such as recreation, leisure and urban breathing facilities. The project intends to provide an open space to the city and restore the existing water body with the appropriate restoration of the environment, as well as ensure recreation and amusement for all age groups of city dwellers.
As the lake is located in the middle of a small hill surrounded by dense forest, it creates a perfect natural setting for visitors to enjoy. The crystal-clear water of the lake reflects the surrounding natural beauty, making it a picturesque location for photography and sightseeing.
However, we design some basic infrastructure like walking paths, benches, and small resting areas for tourists. For instance, we planned the walkway to create an opportunity to stroll around the lake and enjoy the beauty of nature. The surrounding area is also filled with trees, providing visitors with a cool and refreshing breeze while walking. The main attraction of the lake is the natural beauty of the area and visitors can enjoy the picturesque surroundings of the lake, including the lush green forest and serene atmosphere.
Interestingly, it has a connection to the Hindu epic Mahabharata. It is said that Sakuni, a character from the Mahabharata, used to play dice games on the banks of this Lake, hence the name 'Sakuni Lake.'
