The proposal for the Mausoleum of Shaheed Ziaur Rahman received Third Prize in a nationwide architectural competition in 2001. Located within Zia Udyan, the design sought to create a place of remembrance through a restrained architectural and landscape composition. A strong axial approach organizes the journey to the mausoleum, while low horizontal planes, sunken spaces and water integrate the memorial with its surrounding landscape. The architecture also establishes a deliberate visual connection with the National Assembly Building, positioning the mausoleum in dialogue with the larger civic setting of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.
