Description
A quiet dialogue unfolds between heritage and innovation in Bon-er-Bari, where the wisdom of the Bengali homestead is carried into the lush landscape of Gazipur through its natural and cultural context. Located within a two-hour drive from Dhaka, the site is defined by a rich mosaic of paddy fields, dense forest patches, vegetable gardens, and gently undulating terrain. Rather than imposing a built object onto this landscape, the project seeks to reveal itself gradually, allowing architecture and nature to coexist through a carefully choreographed spatial journey.
The concept draws from the spatial intelligence of vernacular architecture of Bengal, particularly the courtyard house or Uthan typology, where family life, climate, and nature are closely interwoven. At the center of the plan is a circular open-to-sky courtyard that functions as the social and climatic heart of the house. This semi-open void organizes movement, encourages visual continuity, and promotes natural ventilation, while anchoring daily life around a shared internal space. Surrounding the courtyard, five bedrooms and common living and dining areas are arranged beneath a singular extended roof, creating a compact yet fluid spatial configuration.
One of the key challenges was minimizing disturbance to the site’s fragile ecology. The villa is lightly elevated above the ground on a raised plinth to respond to the deltaic context and seasonal flooding. This approach minimizes disturbance to the existing terrain, allowing natural water flow, vegetation, and small fauna to pass beneath the structure. Mature trees were carefully preserved, with voids in the roof and ground plane to accommodate their growth, reinforcing the project’s commitment to habitat conservation.
Climate responsiveness is embedded in both form and material. A double-layered super roof, informed by the logic of the traditional chala roof, provides shade, reduces heat gain, and shelters the mud walls from heavy monsoon rainfall. Deep overhangs temper direct sunlight, while the orientation of the building enhances cross-ventilation and daylight penetration, reducing reliance on mechanical cooling.
Material selection reflects a balance between tradition and contemporary construction. Locally sourced mud walls form the primary envelope, offering thermal insulation and a tactile connection to regional craftsmanship. These earthen surfaces are contrasted with refined interior finishes and full-height glass openings that dissolve boundaries between indoor and outdoor spaces. Recycled steel members, sourced from local ship-breaking yards, are used selectively to reduce reinforced concrete use while enabling structural precision and long spans.
Through its circular spatial logic, material honesty, and sensitive response to climate and landscape, Bon-er-Bari explores how tradition can be carried forward through atmosphere, performance, and lived experience.
