Description
Walking along the Sat Masjid Road in Dhaka Metropolitan City can be a daunting task for pedestrians. Despite being a popular pedestrian route, the lack of proper pedestrian facilities and the misuse of what is available make it an unsafe and inconvenient place to walk. Walkways are the portion of the public right-of-way that provides a separate area for people traveling on foot. Supporting and designing a walking-friendly environment and accessible, safe, and inclusive public transport will encourage more people to choose walking and use public transport as a regular mode of travel, creating lively streets and thus making the city more livable. Data received from the police reports shows that more than 48percent of reported road accidents and 72 percent of reported fatalities in the context of Dhaka Metropolitan City involve the pedestrians. A knowledge-based study has been conducted to develop walkability and propose a plan for pedestrian facilities in the study area, making it safe, organized, and convenient for pedestrians. The study involves analyzing traffic and transportation situations, including pedestrian and socio-economic conditions. Four intersections within the area have been selected for internal traffic mobility, and traffic patterns at various points have been analyzed. The primary regions affecting traffic and movement on Sat Masjid Road and Dhanmondi Road 2 have been identified through catchment analysis. People from Mohammadpur and Bosila travel to this region mostly by bus, while people from Rayerbazar use this road frequently.
