Description
The Hydro Ecological City in Joydebpur, Bangladesh, is a visionary urban planning and design concept that aims to restore a rich and diverse ecosystem that has been threatened by illegal encroachment and unsustainable development. The project is designed with a site-sensitive approach, considering the presence of water on three sides, silt brought by the stream, and water bodies on the three sides. The master plan is designed in phases, with land masses defined in high floodplain zones while keeping water bodies unchanged.
The second phase includes ribbon development and urban forests in low-lying land crevices. Roads are developed following contour lines and plot strands, with a community green designated for every strand of settlement. Boating decks are provided on every strand, and land-water edges are designated as leasable agricultural lands.
The fourth phase involves increasing plots, with commercial plots proposed in the lower part and bungalow-type residential plots in the upper part. Roads are designed perpendicular to the water body to ensure more accessible drainage systems.
The fifth phase includes residential plots, amenities, and utilities. In the sixth phase, most plots are converted from 1 bigha to half bigha, and riparian land is extended while low land is increased. The Urban Life Line Concept in RDAP is a key component of the master plan, providing a combination of roads, rails, and waterways that promote sustainable urban development.
The Hydro-Ecological City master plan aims to create a balance between human communities and natural areas, restore a diversified ecosystem, implement creative design solutions, and prevent further illegal encroachment. The project's vision is to create a magical green city that balances a high-growth economy with natural beauty and an ecological system.
